David Twigger, creative director and founder of Vermilion Events, is a huge fan of mid-century modern style, so when he staged this photo shoot at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows, he was well prepared to put his own modern spin on this popular design trend.
For his color palette, David chose bright colors in shades of blue, orange, yellow and green to really make this wedding design pop. Just look at the invitation suite by Page + Parcel. Its vivid mid-century colors and clean, crisp design are perfect for this retro-meets-modern wedding look.

Triangles, always a popular mid-century motif, point the way here to great design. For the ceremony site, Deidre Laskoskie of dei-zinz fresh studio by passed the traditional floral arch in favor of a fresher idea — a sleek triangular wood backdrop in a crisp, clean white. It was perfect for showcasing her very modern arrangements of giant air plants, Teddy Bear sunflowers, Billy Balls and Pincushion protea. Triangles also make an appearance in the dishes and martini glasses in the place settings, and in the fun, oversized martini glasses used in the centerpieces. Look closely and you’ll see how the retro starburst on the invitations is repeated in the artfully arranged rose petals at the ceremony site. And when you check out the luscious three-tiered cake created by the team at Andaz, you’ll surely get stars in your eyes.

Given the resort’s stunning desert setting, David wanted to give a subtle nod to the Southwest and he did so with his choice of orange Cosmo linens. Deidre paid tribute to the desert by adding plenty of lush succulents to her arrangements.
David chose formal white Garbo chairs then balanced them with a curved white sofa to give guests a great gathering spot. Colorful, textured throw pillows complete the setting beautifully.
David gave our ravishing redheaded bride and her dashing groom a classic look. Her sleek satin gown, hair styled in soft body waves and subtle makeup along with his formal slim fit black tux are absolutely timeless. They’ll look perfect riding off into the sunset in the resort’s vintage 1962 Cadillac convertible which is affectionately known, by the way, as Nora as a nod to the Sonoran desert where she lives.
David and his team stepped up to show us how to elevate classic mid-century modern style to new heights. By putting an updated spin on the design and adding Southwestern touches for good measure, they made the most of this dreamy desert setting.
